UPDATE: Directly after the stream, @PlayStation plugged the release date of the PS4 (Holiday 2013).

While I honestly don't think a new console in the market was at all necessary, the stuff being talked about right now is pretty cool. Sony has just unvieled their next home gaming system, the PlayStation 4 (betcha a 3-year-old could've guessed that one).

The system will feature a whopping 8GB of RAM, which will allow you to pause a game, do something else with the console like surf the internet, and hop right back into your game, completely unninterupted. Digital games will download in the background, even as you play the game you're currently downloading. A share button on the new Dualshock 4 controller will allow you to share videos (and I'll assume screenshots as well) to your friends. Said controller has the same basic layout as previous consoles, but features a touchpad on the front and back, similar to the PlayStation Vita. Speaking of the Vita, PS4 games will be able to be played completely on the Vita in a similar fashion to the Wii U and its GamePad's off-screen play function. Supposedly, every PS4 game ever made will be able to stream onto a PS Vita through a shared WiFi network. Livestreaming games to Ustream will be built into the console as well, so no more extra cables and programs required to capture footage. However, PlayStation 3 games will not be able to be played on the PlayStation 4 (in Layman's terms, no backwards compatibility). A feature titled "Cloud Gaming" will apparently allow direct streaming of PS3, 2, and X games, but seems to require an entire rebuy of the game you want to play, and we all know streaming games isn't nearly as smooth as direct play from a disc. The PS3's PlayStation Move peripheral will be compatible with the PS4 and a 3D sculpting program will utilize it. Release date and price was not mentioned for the system.

As I'm not an owner of any Sony systems (save for an old PSX with no good games on it), I won't be covering the games in-depth talked about in the announcment stream. Instead, I will simply list the titles below and you can search up individual articles elsewhere.
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • Driveclub
  • inFAMOUS: Second Son
  • The Witness
  • Deep Down
  • Final Fantasy (Tentative title; more info to come at E3)
  • Watch Dogs
  • Diablo III (Also being released to PS3)
  • Destiny (Also being released to PS3)
Are you hooked? Are you going to buy this new console when it launches? If not, why? Voice yourself in the comments below.
